Blessing Okagbare is one of the five athletes to be inducted into the University of Texas El Paso Sports Hall of Fame on Friday.
According to the UTEP’s website, Okagbare, Antonio Davis (basketballer), Seth Joyner (footballer), Cynthia Ruelas-Macias (volleyballer) and Paul Stankowski (golfer), will be honoured at the Larry K. Durham Sports Center.
They will also be honoured at the UTEP football team’s home game on Saturday.
Okagbare was one of the athletes shortlisted after UTEP called for nominations for the 2017 Hall of Fame earlier in the year.
The Nigerian sprint star claimed double National Collegiate Athletics Association titles in the 100m and long jump in her senior year at UTEP, making her the first athlete in collegiate history to achieve such. She was an 11-time All-American and a 15-time conference champion at UTEP.
She also won the 60m and long jump at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships, setting a Meet Record of 6.87m in the long jump.
The 29-year-old jumper was also nominated for the Bowerman Award – the highest honour given to collegiate track and field student-athletes. She was among the top-three for the award.
