History-making Iheanacho vows to achieve great things

Kelechi Iheanacho has vowed to build on his impressive performance against Fleetwood  Town  as he battles to save his  Leicester City  career.

The Super Eagles forward, who swapped Manchester City for the Foxes on a five-year contract  reportedly worth   £25m in August, hit the back of the net twice in the FA Cup third-round replay against the Cod Army, who campaign in the third tier of English football, at  King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

Iheanacho, who was given a rare start in the encounter, which ended 2-0 in favour of  Leicester,  has been on the fringes of the Premier League club’s  first team squad since he made his debut for the 2016  English champions  in a 4–3 defeat to Arsenal days after his arrival.

The UAE 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner made history in the game  when he became the first player in English football to score a goal following an overturned decision by the Video Assistant Referee system.

The player, who has been linked with a move away from the Foxes in the January transfer window, says he has his sights firmly  set  on helping Leicester achieve their goal.

“It was a very good game and they are a good side so we are happy we got the win,” the 21-year-old striker told LCFC TV.

“Coming back and scoring the two goals, I’m very happy. We worked together as a team and we played a very good game.”

He blamed his slow start to his Leicester  career on  a troublesome toe injury, sustained on his debut in the final preseason game against Borussia Mönchengladbach at the  King Power Stadium in August.

“That slowed things down a little bit,” Leicester Mercury quoted  Iheanacho as saying on Wednesday.

“I am happy I am getting to come back. I am feeling better, stronger and working hard in training every day to progress. I hope I will have a very successful and injury-free second part of the season.

“I am fit now and confident. We have so many more games to come. Keep working hard, and keep playing and help the team to achieve. Fans have seen a bit of me, I hope to continue like that in the future and in the games to come.”

Iheanacho  said he would continue to work hard to play his way into Foxes’ first team.

He said,  “I am happy to get the two goals and now hope to progress in the future.

“It gives me more confidence to play well, get back in the team and help them achieve great things in the future.

“As a footballer, you need to keep working hard through the bad times and the good times. You don’t need to get frustrated. Stick together and work hard every day. If the chance comes, you take it.”
