*OAU Management Gives Conditions for the Reinstatement of Suspended students' Union Activities







The National Association of Nigerian Students, Zone D under the leadership of Comrade Adekitan Lukman Tunice, and other four members of the association met with the management of Obafemi Awolowo University on the 10th of. May, 2018. The association delegates were warmly received at the Vice-Chancellor’s office along with other principal officers of the institution.

The meeting centered on how the students’ union activities which was suspended by the school last year and the suspended students would be reinstated.

According to a release signed by the NANS, Zone D coordinator, Comrade Adekitan Lukman who also confirmed the content of the piece to our correspondent, that the NANS delegates were able to reach  a couple of resolutions with the management, the resolutions read thus :

1, “That the coordinator of NANS South West facilitates a reconnection between the concerned students and the directorate of students’ affairs. Reconnection will serve as an avenue to settle the differences on ground and invariably pave a humble way for the reopening of their school electronics portal.
2. That the management of the school reinstates unconditionally the Students’ Union as soon as the socio-political tensions on ground diminish to the bearest minimum ” the resolutions according to Comrade Adekitan read.

In a bid to confirm this development from the management of the school, the Dean of Students’ affairs, Prof. I Aransi confirmed the meeting between the management and the leadership of NANS zone D in a phone conversation with him, but reacted that ‘no resolution was made’,he claims.

Our correspondent also reached out to the School security Officer, Mr Babatunde Oyatokun Who was also in attendance, after putting a question to him about the meeting, he said ” About five of them came, and we all had a meeting at the Vice Chancellor’s office, and everything that was discussed has to do with the issues of reinstatement of Students’ Union activities on campus, we also discussed about how the suspended students would be reinstated ”. When asked further on how the management reacted to these issues, he said; ” Management are working on the reinstatement, if the students on suspension would comport themselves when they are reinstated, and the VC said, before they can start the reinstatement process, they should stop all the subversive publications that they are putting on the ‘air’ , it’s when they stop this, that the management will know that, they are ready for reinstatement ” Mr Babatunde was unable to stress further on questions posed at him, as he said, he was on a transit.

Efforts made to reach the Vice Chancellor proved abortive as his line was not reachable.
